3M announced that it will discontinue the manufacturing and use of PFAS – widely known as “forever chemicals” – across its product portfolio by the end of 2025.
Since the 1940s, PFAS have been a group of chemicals used in a variety of industrial and consumer products. Among other goods, they are frequently found in electronics, fabrics, cookware, and fire-fighting foam. The chemicals have been shown to build up in the environment and in people's bodies since they have a tendency to be very persistent and don't degrade over time. It is thought that PFAS can have harmful health consequences on people, including low birth weights, malignancies, disturbance of thyroid hormones, and immune system effects.
According to 3M, its decision took into account a number of variables, including regulatory trends aimed at PFAS reduction or elimination and shifting stakeholder expectations.
Mike Roman, 3M chairman and chief executive officer, said:
“This is a moment that demands the kind of innovation 3M is known for. While PFAS can be safely made and used, we also see an opportunity to lead in a rapidly evolving external regulatory and business landscape to make the greatest impact for those we serve.”
The company's yearly net sales of PFAS are projected to be $1.3 billion, with an estimated 16% EBITDA margin.
